It seems that the first leather pig came into being almost by accident when ‘Old Bill’, who worked making hand luggage for Liberty’s of London, wondered what could be done with the leftover leather. He came up with the idea of a stuffed leather pig footstool! The first pig was sold through Liberty’s in 1927 and Liberty’s has stocked the animal ever since. In those days the pigs were made from pigskin and had very long noses!

Dimitri Omersa and his wife Inge came to England in 1955 and settled at Lavender Croft, a sanctuary for refugees in Hitchin, Hertfordshire. Dimitri Omersa, a Yugoslav by birth, had been a naval officer and a political prisoner having been imprisoned by Tito for 10 years after the second world war.

Dimitri Omersa found work in the leather trade and whilst representing a small leather company in Hitchin met ‘Old Bill’ at Liberty’s. ‘Old Bill’ was due to retire and a deal was struck for Dimitri Omersa to take over the business and continue the supply of pigs to Liberty’s. The business was located to Hitchin in 1958 and before long Dimitri Omersa had ideas for other animals! His first new piece was the leather elephant, followed by the leather donkey and leather rhinoceros. Initially, Liberty’s were sceptical of the rhino but it became a “best seller” and subsequently formed the Omersa logo. The animals were sold exclusively through Liberty’s up until the mid-1970’s. Animals made during this period have the words “LIBERTY OF LONDON” embossed on the underside of an ear.

Condition Report

No missing pieces, but the leather shows signs of age in the form of crackles, some minor splits and repairs.

As with all of our products this product is an original piece and has lived a life before it arrived at Otto's HQ. It has been sympathetically restored by the Otto's team to ensure it has a life for many more years to come. All of our products will show signs of patina and cosmetic wear, this we believe is what gives our products their unique charm. We offer a 14 day returns policy, buyer pays return postage. Item must be returned with a reputable courier and must arrive back in the condition it was sent out. No international returns under any circumstances.

Shipping from United Kingdom

Orders will normally be shipped out within 3 working days, all UK orders are next day shipping. Larger orders may be delivered by private courier or pallet service, so please allow a longer delivery and dispatch time.

For larger orders or items shipped by pallet service, it is imperative that you provide a mobile telephone number before your order can be dispatched. Once your order is ready for dispatch we will provide you with a day/date of delivery, which will be between the hours of 9:00am – 6:00pm. It is absolutely essential that you are at the address to take delivery and are reachable on the mobile number you provide. Failure to do so will result in a re-delivery charge by the pallet company of which we have no control over.

All our orders are extremely well packed and time and care is taken to ensure that your order arrives safely with you. In the unfortunate case you order is damaged we can open a claim with the courier and get the item either refunded or repaired (UK orders only). We cannot however refund any breakages to fragile items such as glass as insurance cannot be provided from the courier.
